The Wesleyan Institute for English Language Studies
What do you get when you mix vision and potential – aptitude and enthusiasm - prayer and promise - with a working knowledge of a universal language and technical skills? Men and women who have tools to improve themselves, and in turn, their country. People who can have an influence in education, commerce and government.
Started in 2007 at the request of the Wesleyan Church of Haiti, community English classes taught by Wesleyan missionaries are offered in Anse-a-Galets, La Gonave. The enrollment pre-requisites state that potential students must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma and be able to pay the fees, which are minimal. In 2009, classes in basic computer skills were added, pre-requisites being proficiency in English and ability to pay the minimal fees.
The student profile includes employees of the Wesleyan mission, WISH (West Indies Self Help) and other Christian organizations (Salvation Army, Compassion, International, etc.); doctors, nurses, graduate students, teachers, employees of NGOs, local government officials and workers, the self-employed and the un-employed. A wonderfully diverse picture of people with potential, desiring a hand up, not a hand out.
The program offers four levels of English instruction from very basic to advanced and two levels of computer instruction. The courses are offered twice each year for ten week sessions beginning in September and February. The first level is also offered once each year for four weeks in June. Presently, there are two sections each of English I, of English II, and Level One computer classes meeting twice each week; there is also a computer lab meeting once each week. There are about 70 students total in all the classes.
With training undergirded and influenced by Christian ethics and morals, these prepared men and women will enhance their professional and private arenas with more than professional training. They will influence them for the Lord!
The long-range goal is that The Wesleyan Institute for English Language Studies will grow into an institute of higher learning, offering an accredited post-high school, university setting to serve the people of La Gonave.
