Diversions

There are several ways for your team to experience La Gonave and the different ministries going on in the area. Listed below are some of the more popular activities that teams in the past have enjoyed during their stay.

WISH Gardens Tour

The WISH Gardens are a micro enterprise project started by Cory Thede agriculture missionary here in Haiti. The gardens, which are maintained by our gardener Jean Tini, are a place where new food crops are tested and other proven nutrient rich crops are grown and sold.

The Water System

WISH currently supports the system which supplies the entire town of Anse Galets with fresh drinking water. This is accomplished by piping water from a spring several miles outside of town to fountains spread out through the different neighborhoods. On a tour of the water system you can see some of these fountains as well as drive up the ravine and see the reservoir and the pipes that collect the water.

Hospital Tour

The Wesleyan Hospital is the only hospital for the entire island of La Gonave. It has been opened for over fifty years and is entirely run by a Haitan staff. On a hospital tour you will be shown around the different sections of the hospital by one of the medical staff.

The Market

The local market is where most of the commerce in Anses-A-Galets goes on. This is where the people of the town buy everything from clothing to tools to food. A visit to the market is a great way to experience daily life on the island.

Saline Tour

The Saline represents the poorest part of the town. This area is a salt flat next to the sea considered unlivable by the government. Land here can neither be bought nor sold. Since the land is not owned by anyone, people who can’t afford to live anywhere else have put up rows of shacks here and created a community. This area is a big focus of outreach for a lot of the teams and ministries on the island.

Sandbar

The entire island of La Gonave is surrounded by a system of coral reefs. One of our most popular activities is to take the boat out to a sandbar that has built up around one of these reefs. This is a great opportunity to relax and experience the beauty of the Caribbean Sea.

Orphanage

Because of the difficult economic, environmental, and medical climate here many children in Haiti have been orphaned. Several years ago a lady in our community decided to do something about this. This woman couldn’t stand the thought of children living on the street and began taking these kids in to give them a home. This grew into an orphanage. This small home for children which is only supported through donations and gifts has now grown to have over 60 children. Many teams visit the local orphanage to spend time with the children and hold medicinal checkups.

The Wesleyan Church

If your stay on La Gonave extends across a Sunday, then you will have the opportunity to attend the Wesleyan Church in town. This is a great opportunity to experience Haitian style worship and interact with the local congregation.
