As you step off of the airplane, a wall of heat nearly knocks you to the ground. Squinting in the sunlight, you manage to see the man in front of you making his way across the tarmac and into the Port Au Prince International Airport. You follow quickly behind him wondering what you’ll find once you make it through customs and into this country you’ve heard so much about.

Multi-colored pick-up trucks, bright green mangos bouncing in baskets atop women’s heads, and small children with opened hands stare at you in the streets. You take a deep breath, inhaling exhaust and the funnel-cake like smell of fried plantains. What am I doing here? Your thoughts are interrupted by the honk of a tap tap beside you. You start to wonder again when a man carrying bags of water yells out words you don’t understand.

Coming to this nation will be both a rewarding and challenging experience. You may find yourself both heart-broken and inspired as you step out into a world totally different from the one you’ve always known. If you come humbly, ready to serve and to learn, you will have an opportunity to see God move in amazing ways and may even make an eternal impact here. You will be able to encourage nationals, support missionaries, and learn more about yourself as you give of your time and resources.
