L’Or
PROGRESS UPDATE
Near the epicenter in one of the most heavily damaged areas the Wesleyan church at Place L’Or is situated. This rural congregation in Leogane was in need of a large building which could not only serve as a sanctuary on Sunday mornings but also house the school during the week. Two North American teams have partnered with this church to help meet this need.
These teams from Central New York and Penn Jersey have successfully erected a large pole structure at this site. The main building is standing, and its roof is complete. Additionally, wrap-around classroom structures have been added and are about 80% complete. The church at Place L’Or was the first building in Leogane to be reconstructed, and in this way served as a symbol of hope not only for Wesleyan church members but for all members of the community there.
RECOMMENDATIONS/NOTES
It was dark when the team assessed this site. The school is a total loss, as can be seen in the photographs of the debris. The school building was not measured and was rated as a five. The church appeared to be in relatively good condition.
The church had been running about 85 people in services and four people were baptized in 2009. Pastor Noël advised one person from the congregation died in the earthquake and one was injured.
